Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
